Taner Onsay, PhD

Taner Onsay is a mechanical engineer, educator, and former automotive engineering leader whose career spans industry, research, and engineering education.
In the automotive industry, he spent 28 years in a range of technical and leadership roles, including Engineering Specialist, Senior Automotive Consultant, Noise Control - Wind Noise Supervisor, and Manager of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) testing, development, and laboratory operations.
In parallel, he has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate engineering courses at the University of Michigan–Dearborn for more than 20 years, where he currently serves as a Professor of Practice.
His work has encompassed engineering dynamics, vibration and acoustics, computational modeling, vehicle development, engineering experimentation, and engineering education.
His current work focuses on AI-Augmented Engineering and Conversational Engineering—integrating engineering judgment, physical modeling, computation, validation, and AI collaboration. He is developing and implementing these approaches in engineering dynamics and computational and numerical-methods education through AI First Engineering.
